CS4HS WORKSHOPS
We are still finalising the schedule for this workshop, but will include three days of talks from academic and industry leaders, practical labs with classroom-ready materials, plenty of opportunities for discussion, and we will also be running a hands-on Python programming workshop. We will have activities for beginner programmers to Coding Ninjas (Finch Robots, anyone?) and have plenty of teaching resources available for you to take back to school.
Previous workshops have introduced participants to the design and study of algorithms that are used daily in applications such as Internet search engines, online advertising auctions, algorithmic trading on the stock market, genome sequencing, and artificial intelligence and that have made an impact in our society.
The CS4HS workshops are sponsored by Google and include informative talks by industry and academic leaders and demonstrate engaging ways to introduce recent developments in IT into high school computing classes, as well as incorporating computer science skills into high school science and mathematics classes in line with the proposed national curriculum. Participants also have the opportunity to interact with senior software engineers from Google.
Our workshops aim to provide teachers with support, materials and real world examples of computation in action for use in a classroom setting, including text materials and data for experiments. We present recent developments in the field of computer science and the exciting problems that students can work towards.
Discussion opportunities include a panel of industry representatives, academics and current university students, with a specific focus on how IT skills and algorithmic thinking are necessary for many careers, not just in computer science but also encompassing engineering, science, medical research, architecture and the arts.
We also showcase some of the extension activities and programmes run by the university to extend academically gifted students, such as the National Computer Science School and NCSS Challenge.
