John Makepeace Bennett

Emeritus Professor John Makepeace Bennett (1921-2010) was Australia’s first Professor of Computer Science and the founding Head of the Basser Department of Computer Science at the University of Sydney.

Professor Bennett received his PhD from Cambridge under Maurice Wilkes (recipient of the 1967 Turing Award). The title of his thesis was “Some Engineering Applications of Digital Computation” and his subsequent research interests spanned information retrieval, computer networks and sparse matrix computations.

In 1966, Professor Bennett founded the Australian Computer Society (ACS). He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences in 1982, and was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1983 for his outstanding service to computer science. On behalf of the University, I offer my condolences to his family.
